A solo project of Aaron Bruno, AWOLnation began as a creative outlet for the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Bruno, who had been a member of Home Town Hero and Under the Influence of Giants, needed a break from the collaborative process and hoped to find a place for some of his songs that didn’t fit with his other bands. With AWOLnation, Bruno built a kind of creative free-for-all for himself, allowing him to blend genres as he wanted in a style reminiscent of Beck, blending live instrumentation, electronic elements, and slick production into an electro-pop hybrid that draws from the whole of pop music. In 2011, AWOLnation made its full-length debut, releasing Megalithic Symphony on Red Bull Records.

Formed in St.Louis, Missouri, Pale Divine (then known as The Eyes), quickly became hometown favorites, and had soon attracted a large following on the midwest college circuit. The quartet is fronted by Michael Schaerer, who possesses a powerful voice, charismatic stage presence, and total commitment to his music. Richard Fortus pulls anastonishing variety of sounds out of his guitars, effortlessly switching from cunningly played accompaniment to burning leads. And the rhythm section of drummer Greg Miller and bassist Dan Angenend, Jr. forms a rock-solid pocket, providing driving support for Pale Divine’s unforgettable songs. But, first and foremost, it is the group’s intensity that makes their Atlantic debut, “STRAIGHT TO GOODBYE,” an album to be reckoned with.

By now, the peripatetic trail etched out by Portugal. The Man is well documented. The band’s nomadic path snakes down the Cascades, starting first in Wasilla, Alaska (yes, the very same city whose identity has been hijacked by a certain celebrity politician, one who we shall not mention again here), and then eventually settling in amongst the puddles and monochromatic haze of Portland, Oregon. There were Iditarod-racing parents, wooden cabins tucked deep in the woods, and the sort of upbringing that skews the very notion of convention. But let us end that chapter of Portugal. The Man’s lore and move forward. 

That is the Portugal. The Man of then, In The Mountain In The Cloud is the Portugal. The Man of now.

Something in the Water: A Saint Louis Rockumentary looks back at the unique set of circumstances that electrified the classic rock music scene in St. Louis in the late 60s and early 70s. The exclusive HEC-TV documentary connects the influence of radio and concerts such as Superjam and the Mississippi River Festival (MRF) with musicians who were influenced by the likes of Chuck Berry and Ike Turner. Featuring rare interviews, archived MRF concert footage and photos from the musicians themselves, Something in the Water is a funny, honest and unique account of “ground zero for rock and roll,” as told by those who played a major role in the emergence of classic rock in St. Louis.
